There are more choices than ever for flooring when you are remodeling your home. I've gotten many emails lately from homeowners that are looking to make some upgrades in that area now that income tax refunds are on their way.

Part of the reason for the new choices is the manufacturers and builders responding to demands for eco-responsible materials. Let's look at those first and then at the more traditional materials.

Reclaimed Hardwood

Salvaged flooring is becoming more popular for several reasons. First, it makes more sense to repurpose hardwood than sending it to the landfill. Secondly, it's got that sought-after "seasoned" look.

The basic idea is to carefully remove old floors during the demolition process of a remodel. Then, the best material can be culled and installed in another home, and then refinished. Trendy restaurants have been using this simple concept for years. Now, homeowners are catching on.

Bamboo Flooring is Sustainable

Bamboo flooring is being used more and more, usually as a laminate product, which makes it a snap for a homeowner DIY project.

Bamboo is actually a member of the grass family and very fast growing. This is what gives it a reputation for sustainability. In many places, it grows faster than it can be harvested!

Manufactured Laminate Flooring

The ease of installing laminate floors is one of big selling points of this product. After all, some of us just want to do the job ourselves, right?

There are many good brands out there so don't settle on low quality. Think Pergo, Armstrong, Bruce, and others. Laminate is considered a "floating floor" because it isn't secured to the subfloor. Rather, a soft underlayment first goes down, sometimes with a vapor barrier, and then the planks are snapped together over it. This floor is also very affordable.

Reliable Carpet

The old stand-by is wall to wall carpet. This is a very competitive market, so you can easily strike a good deal with an installer. It is a good choice for homes with small children, but a less-than-good-choice in homes where the occupants suffer from allergies.

These are just a few choices for a new floor for your home. Each has advantages and disadvantages, depending on your requirements. Choose wisely!

The Next President will Appoint at Least Two Supreme Court Judges

It doesn't really matter that as a lame duck president he will have a hard time advancing legitimate legislation, his Marxist ideology will persist for years through this panel of judges-for-life. Don't forget that he already appointed Sonia Maria Sotomayor who incredibly stupidly said she was more capable than a white person to interpret the law since she is a female Latina.

It should also be noted that the US Constitution does not give the court all the power it currently wields. These are often referred to as "assumed powers". If Obama is allowed to stack the deck with even more liberal thinkers, he might also allow them more power to push his stated agenda in areas like gun control and centralized health care.

Obama has Promised to Circumvent Congress

The president has already over-reached his authority by allowing an unprecedented number of "czars" to control sections of our lives. These czars are not elected by the citizenry and are not accountable to congress. They operate at the president's whim and under his direction setting policy.

It might be debatable whether the president has abused his right to legislate via executive orders, but he has done it enough to raise more than a few eyebrows. He has made questionable appointments recently that should only be made in emergency conditions when Congress is out of session.

Be very scared if Obama stays in office. And be prepared to lose more of your rights.
